Chopping Mall: clearly one of the unknown greats of American cinema
A couple weeks ago we ran an article titled Horror movies 101: Where can I see movies in Pittsburgh? and at the end of that article was a tiny little snippet about the Hollywood Theater in Dormont, just south of Pittsburgh.
The Hollywood is a classic neighborhood theater that kept its doors open from the 1950s up until 1998. The screens in this vintage theater were dark for eight years until 2006 when the Bradley Center, a local organization for troubled youth, signed a ten-year lease on the property. The idea was to let the kids from the center run the theater screening second-run films to give them employment experience. Apparently the program fell through though, because the theater shut down again in mid-2008.
Lucky for all of us though, an organization called Motion Picture Heritage has sub-leased the theater from the Bradley Center and will be re-opening the doors to this historic theater
